A Local Web Designer that listens

An experienced web designer will know that your website is a tool through which you can reach your target demographic & customers, but will need some important information to help them deliver an effective website and devise a solid strategy.

Whether you’re a long established small business or a start-up, you’re probably aware of the power of digital marketing as part of your business plan.

You might be new to the realm of web design, or perhaps you’ve decided it’s time to give your current website a much needed facelift to keep up to date with modern web design trends and technologies.

Whatever your reasons, your chances of success will be vastly improved by partnering with a reputable Local Web Designer that will really sit down with you and understand your needs and present your business in the best possible way.

Here are four things a professional Web Designer must know in order for you to get the best from your new business website and avoid any potential snags or surprises, even if you think the changes you are suggesting are easy.

What purpose will your website serve?

The answer to this might seem quite obvious, and in many cases that would be to get more customers right? This may not be the only purpose your website will serve; some just want a website to list out their services & contact details and don’t really want to attract new clients. Some people just want to get people to sign up for their newsletter; others want people to visit their blog or opinion pieces. There are a whole range of things your website can do, so it’s important to be very clear about this before you start a project as this will set the tone of your web design and also give the web designer an idea of whether the project scope is within their capabilities and avoids any surprises.

Content

Initially you may get caught up in the myriad of other elements and requirements that will contribute to your web design, but your website content is the most important thing and should not be overlooked. Will you be writing content yourself or will you need a copywriter? Or will you be importing content from an existing site? You also need to be SEO aware when formulating website content and plan to have at least 300 – 500 words for your landing pages – sometimes more as your content needs to be substantial and original.

Your web designer needs to be immersed in your brand and the nature of your business and the words that potential customers will type into search engines like Google to find them. These key words must also appear in your web page content.

Branding & Design

The colours and style of your logo will quite often be a starting place for the direction of the visual design, and lend to colour choice, graphics, buttons and other elements.

You or your web designer may request a few websites that take your fancy as a starting point to get a better idea of the concepts you seek, and ask what elements you like. It might be the fonts, colours or layout, but keep in mind that sometimes these things may not translate well to your website; especially if you want it replicated exactly which is a bad idea for many reasons!

What features you want

If you need to sell things or require eCommerce functionality for example and any extra services you might need. Other functions and features may include: newsletter sign up, member only login, blog and blog commenting system, social media feeds, database design, image or project galleries and 3rd party plugins like a live chat feature just to name a few.

You will also need to consider what CMS – content management system will be suitable for your website, at Neondragonfly Web Design I provide a custom CMS so it does exactly what it needs to without a plethora of extra modules and functions most small businesses will never use.

Also Think about font choice, colours, and layout styles you like or dislike, and why. Think about your target audience, and whether you already have an existing style you want to migrate to your new site. A website targeted for a younger audience will be more funky, fun or edgy, but an older audience may call for a more conservative, sophisticated or elegant look.

It is important to decide on these things before proceeding with the design because it can be difficult to implement these things as last minute changes and should be avoided as it can interrupt the design flow and other styles.
